Stone Pit

Made with Bryce

Created by Horo

Essentially an experiment using photographic materials. I wanted to something like this the moment I saw David's Screenslope. The problem with using photos for the material on terrains (here 7 terrains, 2 photographs) is the missing option in Bryce to blend over textures/materials when using them on adjacent objects. Not all seams are obvious but some are. Another problem pops up when using a wide camera angle (here 120? at 100%): the picture material gets distorted when near the camera. The vehicles are from DAZ3D. Lit by a weak sun, subdued shadow setting and the MoonBlueGrey HDRI, X=180?, Quality 16, Intensity 10, Effect 40 with Linear 100.

- Lighting is excellent. Materials are awesome. Yes there are resolution issues but the answer is just a higher resolution bmp image, and maybe some bumpmapping. Lighting is incredibly good!

- I'll echo Rashad on the bump thing. There's no hiding how flat the rocks look. The models look cool but that one in the forground doesn't look very mobile with that flat pedestal. The rusty helicopter wreck give the scene an almost post apocalyptic look.

- The material used for the really large boulder/stones is exceptional! I love it. Is it possible you might share it?

Material Sure Rashad. Only, the mat file is 23.5 MB so I have it zipped to 17.4 MB and you can download it from this link: http://www.horo.ch/2blet/RockwallShadow.zip - I cannot promise to leave it there eternally, but for a couple of weeks for sure.

- You've done an excellent job here of blending the photomaterial along with the terrains into the scene. The lighting seems to suit your subject perfectly. The overall effect reminds me very much of Half Life 2 in HDR mode (because of the conflict of angles in places between the photo image and the angle we are viewing it at on the terrain - this happens a lot in first person shooters with their fancy photorealistic materials when draped over their geometries). I can't really find fault with this image, it's not a classical piece of art, but at the same time it's a very good scene in every aspect which lies within the scope of it's subject. Full marks for this - And thank you for making the texture available!

. nice job, but there is a lack of bump, not even bump but more of a displacement, good lighting too.

- Very good, Horo! As far as Bryce tools, sky and terrain editor go, you did amazing work. The material on the largest visible boulder blends extremely well with the surroundings. Good use of the daz vehicles. Very appropriate for the stone pit. In addition to all that's been said above I would recommend, if you're up to go few more steps further with this project, to export the terrains from Bryce and then UV-map them in a different software. This way no matter of the AoV, the texture will show itself with far less stretching and without some washed away edges. Nontheless, with the tools Bryce can offer plus the experience you have using them, I can give you deserved full marks.

Wow This scene is very impressive Horo. It looks like I am standing right there. Your DOF is right on. I am kind of afraid of using DOF. I tried once but could'nt figure it out. You got my vote on this : )
